Legal Requirements for Marrying In Cyprus.
Getting married in Cyprus is not as difficult as you may think. The following information applies only to British Citizens.
Civil Weddings:
Paphos Town Hall is a traditional style building in Pano Paphos, the wedding hall is decorated in rich red velvet. Ceremonies take place between Mondays through to Friday from 8.30am until 1.30pm. Booking well in advance is essential, should the time and day chosen by you be already booked up, we can arrange a civil ceremony in Peyia Town Hall, which is a twenty minute drive from Paphos and Geroskipou Town Hall which is a 10 minute drive from Paphos at Peyia and Geroskipou Town Hall the ceremony will be conducted outside in the gardens. In addition Civil and Religious Wedding Ceremonies can take place in the grounds of your chosen Paphos Hotel this would be an afternoon service with the last ceremony taking place at 5pm, however this time is negotiable. Please note the Municipality will charge a fee for weddings taking place outside of the Town Hall.
Church Wedding can be booked up to 2 years in advance and Civil Ceremonies up to 18 months in advance
Cost of the Special Licence 281.92 Euros and includes the ceremony.
ANGLICAN CHURCH WEDDINGS:
Note: An interview and rehearsal with the chaplain normally precedes a church wedding and a least one Baptism Certificate will be required.
Ayia Kyriaki also know as St Paul’s by the Pillar, a large old church built by the Italians in the 15th century and used today as a place of worship by the Greek Orthodox, Roman Catholics and Anglican communities. The other church used for Anglican Weddings is the Church Of St George, which is a small and more modern church, and is situated between Paphos and Coral Bay. Wedding Blessings can also take place at most of the Hotels in and around Paphos.
Cost of An Anglican Wedding Ceremony:
281.92 Euros: for the Special Licence
598.01 Euros: Church, Minister, Organist and Administration (organist is only available at A.K.)
Please note a non-refundable deposit is required the amount will be advised at time of booking.
Legal Requirements for British Citizens:
IMPORTANT INFORMATION: The following must be presented on the day you go to apply for your Special Licence.
• Passports that have six months validity.
• Passport numbers date and place of issue, expiry date and the full Christian and family names of your two witnesses as shown in their passport. (Witnesses must be over the age of 18).
• If you are a British Citizen and you are a single person, a Sworn Affidavit from a Solicitor of your own country confirming that you are free to get married is required.
• If you are divorced you have to bring with you the original Divorced Certificate, which must be final and absolute. In addition you must have a Sworn Affidavit letter from a Solicitor of your country confirming that you are free to marry. Also, if after divorce you revert back to your maiden name reference to this must be made in your Sworn Affidavit.
• If you have changed your name by Deed Poll you must bring with you the paper work showing that this was done legally. In addition you must have a Sworn Affidavit from your solicitor confirming the name change.
• If you are a widow/widower you have to bring the original death certificate in addition you must have a letter from a Solicitor of your own country confirming you’re free to marry.
• If you are under 18 years old you must bring in addition the consent of your father or legal guardian, which must be certified by a solicitor of your own country.
• The licence cannot be issued in advance however; Paphos Total Weddings can pre-book a church wedding 2 years in advance and for Civil Weddings 18 months in advance.
• The Special Licence cannot be issued in advance and will only be issued with both couples being present and with the completion of the legal paper work.
Note: For all Roman Catholic Weddings, the religious service must be preceded by a registry office ceremony. This does not necessary have to be done on the same day, the choice is yours.
In addition to the above legal requirements the following information is important to those clients that wish to be married in the Roman Catholic Church.
Cost of a Catholic Wedding:
281.92 Euros: for the Special Licence this also includes the civil wedding ceremony
427.15 Euros: Church, Priest, Organist and Administration
• Weddings can only be arranged if the bride or groom has not previously been married, however in certain circumstance i.e. widow/widower.
• You must inform the Catholic Priest in your local parish of your intent to marry overseas. He will then need to view both party’s birth certificate, and will confirm what further documentation is required.
• Your local priest will forward all necessary documents to the Roman Catholic Bishop in Nicosia.
• Once he completes the paper work the documentation will then be forward to Father John Sansour the Parish Priest of the Paphos area, who will be conducting the wedding ceremony.
• We recommend that you bring you bring both parties baptismal certificates.
• Weddings can take place Monday to Sunday.
